Anthony Joseph Blas, an 18-year-old student who had just begun his first semester at California State University, Fullerton, died from apparent alcohol poisoning after attending a party at an unrecognised fraternity chapter. He was dropped off at an emergency room unresponsive in the early hours of 13 September and was pronounced dead despite life-saving attempts. The incident raises serious concerns about the dangers of underground fraternity organisations operating without institutional oversight or safety protocols.

The fraternity involved appears to be Delta Chi, which California State University disavowed in 2021 following nine violations, including hazing allegations and illegal drug and alcohol use. Police authorities have stated that alcohol consumption was a contributing factor and that there is currently no evidence of foul play or hazing, though the investigation remains ongoing. However, Blas's family has expressed deep concern that hazing may have played a role and are particularly troubled by the question of why 911 was not called immediately when he was found unresponsive.
