An ICE agent shot and seriously wounded 29-year-old Venezuelan national Wilber Rafael Garces Perez during a traffic stop and subsequent foot pursuit in north Austin, Texas. The incident prompted protests, clashes with police and calls from Democratic politicians for an independent investigation, amid uncertainty over the circumstances of the shooting.

Perez was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition, while authorities said the investigation remained at an early stage and Austin police were not involved in the shooting. Protesters threw rocks and bottles at officers, who responded with pepper balls and chemical agents; Congressman Greg Casar and Mayor Kirk Watson called for body-camera footage to be released and for outside scrutiny of the case.
