Proxmox ports itself to Arm with help from Nvidia and Supermicro

Proxmox Server Solutions has released an Arm-compatible version of its open-source Proxmox Virtual Environment, developed in collaboration with Nvidia and Supermicro, as it targets the growing market for AI-focused datacentres. The move is notable because Arm adoption among enterprise server vendors remains limited, and the partnership suggests genuine customer demand for virtualising AI infrastructure on Arm-based hardware, an area where market leader VMware has so far moved cautiously.

The new release, version 9.2, runs on 64-bit Arm (arm64/aarch64), with full support currently limited to Nvidia's Grace Hopper and Vera platforms, plus best-effort support for other UEFI-based ARMv9-A hardware; it will not work on boards like the Raspberry Pi. Proxmox says the software already runs in select enterprise production environments and shares its codebase, tooling and release cycle with the x86-64 version, built on Debian 13.5, Linux kernel 7.0, QEMU 11.0, LXC 7.0 and ZFS 2.4. Proxmox joins existing Arm-supporting virtualisation players such as SUSE, Sangfor, Xen and KVM, while analyst firm IDC notes non-x86 servers now account for nearly half of all server spending, driven largely by hyperscale clouds like AWS, Microsoft and Google rather than traditional enterprise vendors.
