PSG’s Ligue 1 home opener moved to Rennes after pitch damaged by heat
Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue 1 season-opening home match against Rennes has been relocated to Rennes' Roazhon Park at short notice, after the pitch at the Parc des Princes was damaged by this summer's extreme heat in Paris. The club said the surface had deteriorated to the point where playing there would compromise player safety and physical wellbeing, prompting the late change of venue. The move highlights how extreme weather, increasingly linked to the climate crisis, is beginning to disrupt elite sport's routine scheduling.
The switch was announced late on Wednesday by the LFP's competitions committee and made "in agreement" with Rennes, whom PSG thanked for accommodating the change. PSG had explored alternative Paris venues, including Paris FC's Stade Jean-Bouin, the Stade Sébastien-Charléty and the Stade de France, before turning to the league for help after none proved available. The club apologised to supporters for the inconvenience and said it has identified a fix to replace the Parc des Princes pitch ahead of its next home fixture, against Monaco on 4 September, with the reverse fixture against Rennes expected, though not yet confirmed, to be moved back to Paris in March.
