This is despite President Trump previously praising the former state trooper's record of apprehending serious criminals, and the setback highlights ongoing uncertainty over who will take permanent charge of the agency at a time when its enforcement operations remain a major political flashpoint.

Schroyer, a former state trooper, had been positioned as a leading candidate for the role, with Trump citing his history of catching what he termed the "worst of worst" offenders. However, the push to install him has stalled without a clear timeline for when, or whether, it will be revived, leaving ICE's leadership question unresolved for now.
