England defender Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-match ban by Fifa's disciplinary committee after his red card in the 3-2 World Cup win over Mexico, ruling him out of Saturday's quarter-final against Norway and any potential semi-final. The sending-off, for a high challenge on Jesus Gallardo classed as serious foul play, adds an extra game to the automatic one-match suspension and deepens head coach Thomas Tuchel's difficulties at right-back, though the ban would expire in time for the final in New Jersey on 19 July should England reach it.
Quansah, 23, had filled in against Mexico with Reece James injured, but Tuchel expects James to be fit for the Norway game. The Football Association explored an appeal but found no route to contest the ban under tournament rules, though it made strong representations over the review process, arguing the referee saw a still image and slow-motion replays before viewing the incident at full speed, raising the risk of "outcome bias". The case has drawn comparisons with US forward Folarin Balogun, who received only a suspended one-match ban for a similar offence after President Donald Trump reportedly called Fifa president Gianni Infantino; the BBC notes, however, that VAR protocol permits slow-motion for the point of contact and was followed in both cases.
- Quansah banned two games, missing England's Norway quarter-final and any semi-final.
- No appeal route exists; FA still protested the review process used.
- Case highlights apparent inconsistency with Balogun's lighter, suspended punishment.
