## Key points

- A 12-year-old girl was among the injured.
- Investigators found a WWII-era gun and a booby-trapped apartment.

## Summary

A gunman killed one man and wounded five people, including a 12-year-old girl, in shootings across Trappes and nearby La Verrière, west of Paris. President Emmanuel Macron described the attack as racist terrorism, saying people had been targeted because of their skin colour or perceived religion; investigators are examining the motive.

The shootings unfolded over about 15 minutes at three locations. Police found a Second World War-era Sten-type submachine gun and tear gas in the suspect’s car, and discovered his apartment had been booby-trapped with three gas cylinders and timer-connected wires. Three of the wounded were reported to have life-threatening injuries, and France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor opened an investigation into murder linked to a terrorist enterprise.
