## Key points

- About 70,000 tents flooded within 12 hours of Gaza’s first winter storm.
- Civil Defence received 1,500 distress calls in 10 hours.
- Gaza urgently needs 200,000 tents and heating supplies.

## Summary

New figures show the storm flooded about 70,000 tents in Gaza within 12 hours, with initial losses estimated at $3m. The flooding has forced people from some shelter centres and added to the dangers facing displaced families as winter begins.

Civil Defence received about 1,500 distress calls in 10 hours, and water rose 30–40cm at some sites. More than one million displaced people face a harsh winter, with Gaza urgently needing about 200,000 tents and heating supplies; emergency crews say they have no tents or tarpaulins to distribute. The storm also flooded al-Shifa hospital’s emergency department for about four hours and brought down parts of damaged buildings, injuring people.
