Showrunner April Blair said the change made Ellie’s pregnancy with Yancy’s child central to the drama, raising the emotional stakes around Yancy, Ellie and his former wife Sidney and setting up a potential next chapter.

Ellie’s pregnancy is initially concealed through camera angles and costumes, before being revealed midway through the season as Sidney prepares to leave town. Yancy had been misleading Sidney about the state of his relationship with Ellie; their earlier marriage was connected to grifting, while he has tried to leave that life behind. Blair said Tejada’s due date was almost the same as filming wrapped, requiring the writers to quickly alter the season’s plot.
