A joint BBC Eye and BBC News Ukraine investigation has named four men accused of systematically torturing and raping civilians in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine, in alleged war crimes that remain unpunished. Survivors have spoken out in the hope of securing justice, describing being raped, electrocuted and forced to eat dirt, with Ukrainian prosecutors saying victims of sexual violence have ranged from children as young as four to the elderly. The accounts add to mounting documentation of abuses that survivors and investigators want to see prosecuted.

Among those featured is Liudmyla Huseinova, who was detained by pro-Russian forces in Donetsk in 2019 on spying allegations, having in reality been supplying food to soldiers and helping children at an orphanage. She was held at the notorious Izolyatsia prison until a 2022 prisoner exchange, and describes being taken to a second-floor area known for torture. There she says she was mocked as "old" and sexually assaulted by a Russian-accented man called Koval, who was alongside a former Ukrainian traffic officer turned collaborator, Yurii Temerbek. The investigation, aired in a film titled "Ukraine survivors: Finding my abusers," identifies Temerbek, Yermak, Vadim Shakhmatov and Andrey Spivak among the alleged perpetrators.
