## Key points

- Nicki Minaj backed Republicans alongside Trump at a Michigan rally.
- Michigan’s Senate race remained close ahead of the midterms.
- Trump’s comments about Abdul El-Sayed’s faith drew criticism.

## Summary

The new coverage centres on Nicki Minaj’s appearance with Donald Trump at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, where she urged voters to elect Republicans in the midterm elections. She said Trump had “changed the energy of the country” and given people “a future to look forward to”, bringing celebrity support to a campaign that will determine which party controls Congress for the rest of his presidency.

Michigan’s Senate race between Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers was tight, with just over a week until the 3 November vote. Trump focused on El-Sayed’s Muslim faith and alleged he would “invite jihadists” into the US; El-Sayed has called similar remarks Islamophobic. Trump praised Minaj’s appearance before inviting her to speak, and she travelled to the state aboard Air Force One.
