Rare moth find in town park sparks hopes of others

BBC Science · 1 month ago

Conservationists have recorded a rare moth, the six-belted clearwing, for the first time in Telford, Shropshire. The West Midlands Butterfly and Moth Society said it was "delighted" by the sighting at Rough Park nature reserve, and hopes the discovery signals that the species may be present elsewhere in the area.

The moth, described as "tiny and easily overlooked", lays its eggs in Bird's-foot trefoil, a plant common on Telford's former brownfield sites. It was found by the newly formed Telford & Wrekin Butterfly and Moth Recording Group using pheromone lures that mimic the female's scent to attract males. Two other potential sites have been identified, and the society, noting that Telford is under-recorded for moths despite holding regionally important species, wants to encourage the spread of Bird's-foot trefoil to support other butterflies and moths.
