Rare photographs of detained former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi have been released by the country's military government, marking her first publicly documented contact with a foreign representative since the 2021 coup that removed her from power. The images, showing the 81-year-old Nobel laureate meeting an International Committee of the Red Cross official, matter because they offer the first concrete visual evidence of her wellbeing in years, giving her family and international observers a rare glimpse into her circumstances amid ongoing uncertainty over her treatment and access.

The photographs, dated 3 August 2026, show Suu Kyi with ICRC resident representative Arnaud de Baecque, alongside two further images from a June celebration marking her 81st birthday. Her son Kim Aris, based in London, said the pictures gave him "a reason to hope" but cautioned that "hope is not proof, and one meeting cannot answer the questions my family has lived with since the coup." Since the coup, which triggered a civil conflict that has killed around 100,000 people and displaced millions across Myanmar's 55 million-strong population, Suu Kyi has remained in detention; in April 2026 she was moved to house arrest following a military-orchestrated election under junta chief Min Aung Hlaing.
