Reading and Leeds Festival is introducing what organisers describe as its biggest-ever staging and arena overhaul, including redesigned major stages and new areas aimed at broadening its appeal. The changes matter because the festival has developed a reputation for attracting teenagers and younger adults, and organisers hope features such as an over-21s campsite and quieter space will encourage a wider age range to attend.

All six main headliners are British or Irish acts for the first time in 25 years, with Charli XCX, Dave, Raye, Fontaines DC, Chase & Status and Florence + The Machine leading the bill. The main stage has been renamed The Grid and will include a walkway into the audience, while new venues include The Gallery and dance-focused Warehouse; some observers nevertheless question whether revised spaces for smaller acts will continue to support emerging artists from varied backgrounds.
