## Key points

- Real Madrid expect to sign 16-year-old JJ Gabriel in January.
- The forward has not returned to Manchester United since September.
- United are due compensation, but no club-to-club talks have taken place.

## Summary

Real Madrid expect to sign Manchester United forward JJ Gabriel in January after reaching a verbal agreement with the 16-year-old and his representatives. The move would end his time at United, where he remains registered but has not returned since leaving in September, and highlights the competition between major European clubs for a highly rated young player.

No club-to-club talks have taken place, and United would be due compensation if Gabriel leaves; the amount would be lower if he joins a club outside the Premier League. His European Union passport is expected to make a move abroad easier. Gabriel joined United in 2022, scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut and was named Premier League Under-18 Player of the Season last term, aged 14.
