Ref, I barely brushed him! The artist who’s painted all of Roy Keane’s red cards

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

Irish painter Seánie Harte has created a series of oil pastel paintings depicting all 11 occasions on which Roy Keane was sent off while playing for Manchester United, transforming the midfielder's most notorious moments of on-pitch aggression into colourful, playful artworks. The project draws inspiration from Keane's own blunt, humorous retellings of his red cards on the Stick to Football podcast, with Harte pairing each painting with a matter-of-fact quote from the footballer himself, reframing infamous incidents with wit rather than condemnation.

Harte's loose, figurative style has drawn comparisons to the artist Elizabeth Peyton, though inspired by Premier League highlights rather than bohemian icons. Notable works include depictions of Keane's stamp on Gareth Southgate in 1995, his clash with Alan Shearer, a foul on Chelsea's Gus Poyet, and his infamous revenge tackle on Alf-Inge Haaland. Having built a following on Instagram and through print sales since debuting the series last year, Harte will open an exhibition titled Sent Off: Paintings of Every Roy Keane Red Card at the Hen's Teeth space in Dublin.
