Reform UK branch forced to apologise over AI blunder after posting fake photo of village cleanup

Daily Mail · 1 hour ago

A local branch of Reform UK has been forced to apologise after posting AI-generated "before and after" photos purporting to show a village clean-up in Sarre, Kent, carried out by party volunteers. The images quickly drew suspicion online and mockery from opposition councillors, raising questions about the honesty of the party's promotion of its community work and highlighting the risks of using AI-manipulated imagery in political messaging.

The doctored "after" photo showed suspiciously white fencing that had gained an extra slat, freshly tarmacked footpath, and a car parked in an identical position with unchanged clouds and shadows. Mike Sole, Liberal Democrat leader on Canterbury City Council, called it "a lesson in how not to use AI", suggesting Reform were "not telling the truth". The party's Herne Bay and Sandwich branch has since edited the original Facebook post to include a genuine photo and apologised, blaming an "administrative oversight" by unpaid volunteers acting independently of Reform UK HQ.
