Daevid Allen, the founder of progressive rock band Gong, died of cancer in March 2015 aged 77, but had deliberately prepared the band to survive his death. Before his passing, he had assembled a new line-up and encouraged them to continue performing, giving his blessing for them to carry on without him when illness prevented him from touring.

Allen recruited Kavus Torabi as an additional guitarist in 2014 and had also brought in Brazilian guitarist Fabio Golfetti and bassist Dave Sturt. When Allen became ill and couldn't complete the world tour, the band performed the remaining dates without him, discovering a new chemistry in the process. With Allen's enthusiastic encouragement sent from his sick bed in Australia, the band decided to continue, releasing their transitional 2016 album Rejoice! I'm Dead! Allen had carefully chosen members who shared his musical ethos, ensuring Gong's legacy would continue beyond his lifetime.
