‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’ Star Sally Field Has An Appreciation For Octopuses & Anger

Deadline · 2 hours ago

Sally Field has drawn attention for an unlikely co-star: an octopus. In Netflix's Emmy-nominated film *Remarkably Bright Creatures*, adapted from Shelby Van Pelt's bestselling novel, Field plays Tova Sullivan, a 70-year-old widow working nights at an aquarium, where she forms a bond with a grumpy octopus named Marcellus, voiced by Alfred Molina. The role marks a departure from an octopus co-star being an unusual pairing for an actress best known for human dramas such as *Steel Magnolias*, *Norma Rae* and *Places in the Heart*.

In an interview, Field discussed her existing fascination with octopuses, citing the documentary *My Octopus Teacher* and the book *The Soul of an Octopus* as prior influences before she took the role. She revealed the project came to her via her son, screenwriter Peter Craig, who had obtained early galleys of Van Pelt's then-unpublished novel. Field also praised co-star Lewis Pullman, who plays down-on-his-luck musician Cameron, saying she knew instantly he was right for the part and that much of their on-screen dynamic was improvised rather than scripted.
