Remember When Aretha Franklin and Dean Martin Both Covered a Glen Campbell Hit in the Same Year?

Glen Campbell’s recording of “Gentle on My Mind”, written by John Hartford, became one of his best-known songs despite reaching only the Top 30 as a single. The song’s success prompted many covers, including versions by Aretha Franklin and Dean Martin, showing how it travelled beyond country music.

Franklin released her cover on the 1969 album *Soul ’69*; it reached the Top 50 on Billboard’s R&B chart. Martin’s album of the same name had come out in 1968, and his single reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart. Patti Page also had a Top 10 hit with the song in 1968, while Campbell’s recording remains the best-known and earned him his first two Grammy Awards.
