George Harrison’s 1982 album Gone Troppo received remarkably little attention despite his status as a former Beatle, largely because he chose not to promote it. The low-profile release reflected his growing discomfort with fame after an intensely active 1970s, personal difficulties and the murder of John Lennon, and it preceded a five-year retreat from making records.

Recorded at Harrison’s home studio over four months, Gone Troppo was co-produced with Ray Cooper and Phil McDonald and relied mostly on session musicians rather than high-profile guests. Released in November 1982, it produced no charting singles, no promotional videos and no interviews; Harrison later acknowledged giving his record company little support. After fulfilling his contract, he stepped away until returning successfully with 1987’s Cloud Nine and the Traveling Wilburys.
