The New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies, established by Governor Kathy Hochul in late 2023, was tasked with examining the state's historical ties to slavery, Jim Crow discrimination, and redlining. The nine-member commission concluded a series of statewide public hearings and is charged with recommending state-level financial compensation and policy reforms. State lawmakers cited conservative legal challenges to diversity initiatives as justification for the extension and added legal protections for commissioners. The U.S. Freedmen Project, advocating for direct descendants of enslaved Americans, has expressed scepticism about reparations and maintains the focus should be narrowly defined to this group rather than broader Black categories.
