## Key points

- Republicans are divided over why they suffered projected election losses.
- Trump’s leadership, the Iran war and living costs are under scrutiny.
- Democrats are projected to control both chambers of Congress.

## Summary

New criticism from within the Republican Party has sharpened the debate over whether Donald Trump’s leadership contributed to the party’s projected heavy election losses. The dispute matters because Democrats are projected to take control of both chambers of Congress, while some Republicans warn the party could struggle to recover.

Former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene blamed Trump’s policies and behaviour, while Vice-President JD Vance said the administration should have paid more attention to voters’ concerns about the Iran war, living costs and relations with Israel. Trump broadly agreed the war played a part, but other Republicans disputed that explanation: Glenn Grothman said Trump’s conduct turned voters off, and Marc Short called for a party refresh. The projections put Democrats on 54 Senate seats and 237 House seats, compared with Republicans’ 44 and 145.
