## Key points

- GOP senators dropped their block on Trump's attorney general pick
- A deal was struck over a disputed $1.8bn fund
- Fears the fund could enable politically motivated probes drove the standoff

## Summary

A group of Republican senators who had threatened to block Donald Trump's nominee for attorney general ultimately reversed their opposition after reaching an agreement over a disputed $1.8 billion fund that critics had labelled a "weaponization slush fund." The reversal resolved an unusual rebellion within the president's own party, clearing the path for the nominee's confirmation to proceed without further delay.

The senators' original objection centred on fears that the fund could be used to pursue politically motivated investigations or targets, prompting them to withhold their backing despite pressure from the White House. Their eventual change of position followed negotiations that appear to have addressed these concerns, though full details of the agreement's terms and the identities of every senator involved were not confirmed in available reporting.
