## Key points

- Republicans want Trump to change course after the midterm defeat.
- Democrats can investigate his administration and block legislation.
- Trump has defended his agenda despite warnings from allies.

## Summary

The midterm defeat has prompted fresh calls from Republican allies for Donald Trump to change direction, with some warning that his current approach could lead to further losses. Trump has shown little sign of a reset, saying he did not view the result as a personal setback and continuing to defend his agenda.

Democrats now control Congress and can block legislation, investigate the administration and challenge nominees, potentially pushing Trump towards more executive action. A White House official said internal polling had warned of losses six weeks before the election, while Vice-President JD Vance blamed the eight-month-old Iran war; Republicans also cited tariffs, White House staffing and Trump’s focus on a ballroom project.
