Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe faces fury after saying Dunblane massacre was ‘one murder’ as he condemned tough gun laws
Rupert Lowe, leader of Restore Britain and MP for Great Yarmouth, is facing a strong backlash after describing the 1996 Dunblane massacre as "one murder" during an appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast. He made the remark while criticising the tight gun laws introduced in the UK after the tragedy, in which 16 young children and their teacher were killed. The comment matters because it misrepresents Britain's deadliest mass shooting and has drawn accusations of insensitivity towards the victims and their families.
Lowe told Rogan that handguns had been banned "because there was a murder up in Dunblane", and when Rogan queried "One murder?", Lowe confirmed "One murder." He argued that gun licensing laws had made sports such as hunting difficult, and cited his late father's pistols being taken away, saying society "needs radical change". A spokesman said Lowe was "clearly referring to one incident", but Scottish Conservative MSP Stephen Kerr called the remarks "shocking", noting that 16 children and their teacher were murdered and 15 other pupils wounded. At Dunblane Primary School on 13 March 1996, Thomas Hamilton killed 17 people and injured 18 others before taking his own life.
