Retired civil engineer Gerald Ring, 82, was fatally stabbed in his front garden by his neighbour Julian Donoher, 51, in September. Ring reached his home and called 999 but died in hospital three days later; Donoher was sentenced to a hospital order after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The court heard that Donoher had schizoaffective disorder, a history of mental-health problems and extensive drug and alcohol misuse, as well as previous convictions for violence and drug possession. He had stopped taking his medication and developed a delusion that Ring was a paedophile, despite there being no evidence of this; Ring’s daughter has called for significant changes to how offenders with mental-health conditions are managed.
