Organisers in Edinburgh are drawing up early-stage plans for a brand new TV festival in the Scottish capital, even before the current Edinburgh TV Festival stages its final edition there after 51 years. The move comes as the long-running event prepares to relocate to Greater Manchester, and reflects a determination among local industry figures not to cede Edinburgh's role as a hub for TV decision-makers each August.

Screen Scotland, which represents the Scottish film and TV sector, commissioned research earlier this year into what a replacement festival might look like, led by former Edinburgh TV Festival creative chief Rowan Woods. Woods has now delivered a range of recommendations to Screen Scotland, discussed at a roundtable of around 20 industry figures in Glasgow last week. A decision on whether to proceed is expected within weeks, potentially before the final Edinburgh TV Festival begins on 25 August, with any new event likely to run in the same month to coincide with the Edinburgh Fringe.
