RFK Jr. Blasts CNN’s Erin Burnett as Having ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ Over Report Finding His ‘Affordable’ Family Meal Costs 3.6 Times What Health Secretary Claimed

Variety · 2 hours ago

US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has accused CNN anchor Erin Burnett of suffering from "Trump Derangement Syndrome" after the network aired a report challenging his claims about the affordability of a recipe featured on his YouTube cooking show, "The Real Food Show". The row highlights ongoing tension between Kennedy and mainstream media outlets over his public health messaging, particularly his "Make America Healthy Again" campaign promoting home cooking as a low-cost, healthy option.

CNN correspondent Tom Foreman's report, broadcast on 19 August, recreated a salmon cake and white-bean salad dinner that Kennedy said would feed a family of four for $19.64, and found the actual grocery cost at a local chain store was $70.54 — more than three-and-a-half times his figure. In a post on X, Kennedy dismissed the discrepancy as flawed "basic arithmetic", arguing CNN had wrongly costed entire ingredient packages rather than the amounts actually used in the recipe, likening it to being charged for a whole bottle of ketchup for a single squirt. He said his show uses "standard recipe costing" so leftover pantry items can be reused in future meals, and framed the row as part of his broader push to help Americans cook healthily and affordably. Variety said it had contacted CNN for comment.
