Rick and Morty's season 9 finale, "Field of Dreams," delivered another emotionally brutal episode, and showrunners Dan Harmon and Scott Marder say that intensity is essential to keeping the long-running animated series true to itself. Harmon argues that softening Morty's ordeals would make the show "unrecognisable," noting that the character has effectively lived through a decade of trauma while trapped in an abusive dynamic with his grandfather Rick, despite never physically ageing.

In the episode, Morty visits an alternate version of his family who cut ties with Rick over his refusal to tackle his alcoholism, and finds a healthier, sober, happily married Rick who teaches at MIT. Morty nonetheless persuades this Rick to build a portal gun, an obsession that destroys his marriage and pushes him back into drinking and nihilism, restoring the dysfunctional Rick and Morty dynamic by the episode's end. Marder describes this push-and-pull, in which Morty is shaped by Rick's toxicity yet ultimately corrupts this alternate Rick to get what he wants, as central to the show's enduring appeal, while Harmon says both characters have grown over nine seasons without losing their core identities.
