Ricky Gervais has put his River Thames-side house in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, up for sale for £2.95million, the latest sign that he is putting his financial affairs in order after revealing plans to marry his long-term partner Jane Fallon to reduce a future inheritance tax bill. The comedian, 65, announced two weeks earlier that he and Fallon, together for 44 years, were finally marrying, just months after she disclosed she has breast cancer. Gervais had previously argued marriage was pointless, making the decision notable as a pragmatic financial move rather than a romantic one.

The four-bedroom 1920s house, bought for £2.75million in 2014 and described by Gervais as his "little country retreat", has flooded at least five times since 1947, including in 2024, with CCTV images of the flooding submitted as part of his planning application. After a two-year battle, he won council approval in April to demolish it and build a Grand Designs-style mansion featuring a flood buffer zone and raised ground floor, but has now chosen to sell instead, letting a buyer either keep the existing home, which has a private mooring and tennis court, or proceed with the approved rebuild. Gervais, whose fortune is estimated at £141million, mainly lives in a £14.75million Hampstead mansion.
