Ridley Scott has rejected cinematographer John Mathieson’s claim that his multi-camera filming style is “lazy”, calling the criticism misguided. Scott said using several cameras at once allows scenes to be captured more efficiently, reduces the need for repeated takes and gives editors more material to work with, while still requiring careful planning and visual judgement.

Mathieson, who worked with Scott on both Gladiator films, had described the director’s recent approach as rushed and unpopular with some collaborators. Scott said he typically uses between four and 11 cameras, completes extensive storyboards beforehand and may need only two or three takes instead of 15 or more; he is promoting The Dog Stars, due in cinemas on Friday, and is also planning a Treasure Island adaptation.
