The Fitzroy River in Rockhampton, Queensland, has been approved to host Olympic and Paralympic rowing and canoeing events at the 2032 Brisbane Games following an independent technical assessment. The decision is notable because the river is home to approximately 500 saltwater crocodiles, though the venue is already an established training and competition facility for flatwater sports, and contingency plans are in place for crocodile sightings.

The technical assessment examined water conditions, weather patterns, water levels and flood risk but did not specifically evaluate the crocodile population; Olympic officials have been assured of athlete safety. World Rowing and Paddle Worldwide both endorsed the course, with their presidents stating it can provide fair competition conditions. However, three-time Olympic gold medallist Drew Ginn expressed concerns about potential flooding, fairness issues between racing lanes (with times potentially differing by two to three seconds), and the remote location of Rockhampton, approximately 6–7 hours from Brisbane, which he believes may negatively affect the athlete and spectator experience.
