Rivian will introduce optional second-row captain’s chairs for its R1S electric SUV in the 2027 model-year refresh, addressing a long-standing request from owners seeking easier access to the third row. The change matters particularly for families using child seats, while retaining the seven-seat bench option for buyers who prioritise passenger capacity.

The captain’s chairs are heated, fold flat and include armrests, cupholders and car-seat tie-downs, but can add up to $4,500 because they require a $2,500 package plus $1,500–$2,000 for the seats. Rivian is also renaming R1 trims as Premium, Performance and Quad without changing performance figures, adding new R1T all-season wheels and Esker Silver paint; prices now start at $79,990 for the R1T and $83,990 for the R1S before fees.
