Cyber-attack on CRM provider may expose RNLI supporters’ data
The RNLI has warned supporters that their personal information, including names, contact details, and interaction records, may have been stolen in a cyber-attack on Beacon CRM, the customer relationship management company it uses. The breach, which occurred in late July and affected approximately 1,500 charities, comes as the organisation faces significant intimidation from far-right activists who object to its rescue operations involving asylum seekers attempting to reach the UK.
The Portsmouth lifeboat station was temporarily forced to close following protests on 6 September, when activists blockaded a landing spot where RNLI crews had assisted 120 asylum seekers; police officers were injured during the confrontation. Despite far-right groups calling for people to stop donating and engaging in both online and physical abuse of staff and volunteers, the RNLI has reported experiencing a significant boost to fundraising. Beacon CRM has stated there is no evidence the attack was targeted, and the RNLI has found no evidence to date that supporters' data has been misused, published, or shared.
