Rob Thomas Apologizes After ‘Almost Killing’ Matchbox Twenty Bandmate With Flying Mic Stand: ‘I Feel Like an Ass’

Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas has apologised after accidentally hitting bandmate Paul Doucette with a swinging microphone stand during a concert at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield on 16 August 2026. Fan-shot footage showed Thomas twirling the stand as part of his usual on-stage routine when the metal pole broke free and struck Doucette, who was seen doubling over in pain before hurrying offstage. Thomas addressed the incident mid-show, telling the crowd he feared he had "almost killed" his best friend and bandmate of three decades.

Doucette, 53, later returned to the stage after having his damaged in-ear monitors replaced, joking with the audience about the 30-year hazard of Thomas's mic-swinging habit. In a follow-up Instagram video, Doucette showed shattered pieces of the monitor being removed from his ear, jokingly branding himself Thomas's "first victim" after three decades of the ritual. Thomas has pledged to stop the stunt and said he would be apologising "all month," while the band prepares for upcoming shows at the Utah State Fair on 18 September and the Oceans Calling Festival in Maryland on 27 September.
