Cinematographer Robert Richardson, who has earned ten Oscar nominations and three Academy Awards, was honored at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival with the world premiere of a documentary examining his career and personality. Directed by Czech filmmaker Jana Hojdová, the film traces Richardson's collaborations with major American directors including Oliver Stone, Quentin Tarantino, and Martin Scorsese, the latter of whom notably declined to hire him for one project. Now 70, Richardson is widely respected in the industry as both technically brilliant and notoriously demanding.

Hojdová's project, which began as a 2016 student assignment, transformed unexpectedly when the director became unable to leave Richardson's home during the pandemic lockdown. The unplanned extended stay, initially troubling for Richardson who worried about maintaining his property, ultimately provided material benefits including access to archived materials and old film reels that enriched both the documentary and Richardson's personal records. The resulting film offers an unvarnished look at a temperamental artist whose exacting standards are offset by the admiration of his professional peers.
