Rocket test flight could be attempted from Shetland in August

BBC Science · 3 hours ago

SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland has declared a five-week launch opportunity beginning 10 August for potential commercial rocket test flights, with the German company Rocket Factory Augsburg anticipated to conduct initial tests this year. The facility will schedule launch attempts exclusively on three designated weekdays between 4 and 8 PM, allowing residents at least one day's advance notice of any planned activity.

The spaceport will enforce a four-hour exclusion zone covering the facility and nearby waters during launches, requiring vessels to depart the area, whilst a larger warning zone extending toward the Arctic will trigger flight diversions and maritime notifications. The facility has offered local islanders access to viewing spaces and vehicle passes for visitors, positioning the operations as part of a broader commitment to safety protocols and community relations.
