Director Roel Reiné, known for his work on the Halo television series, has been announced to direct Lunar Colony, a science fiction thriller that reimagines humanity's future with a lunar colony. The project, brought together by Centerboro Productions, Sintered Steel Productions and Convoke Media, began attracting buyer interest at the Toronto International Film Festival last week. The film positions itself as a Romeo and Juliet-style romance set against a backdrop of interplanetary tension, drawing inspiration from NASA's Artemis programme which aims to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon.

Set in 2060, roughly three decades after the establishment of Terra 2.0, a permanent lunar civilisation, the narrative explores mounting tensions as Earth becomes increasingly dependent on the colony's resources. The central love story follows Tiara and Josh, two young people raised on opposite sides of the Earth-Moon divide, whose relationship challenges political loyalties and family expectations. Written by Cerise Fukuji and produced by Patricia A. Beninati among others, the film is targeted to enter production in 2027, with principal casting currently underway. Reiné has expressed his vision for the Moon as a "completely real, beautiful, brutal and industrial" setting, with Earth depicted as damaged and exploited, whilst the emotional core remains grounded in themes of freedom, love and sacrifice.
