Roland has entered the generative AI music space with Melody Flip, a plug-in for digital audio workstations that generates short musical loops rather than complete songs. Unlike tools such as Suno or Udio, which produce fully polished tracks with vocals and arrangements, Melody Flip is designed to spark creativity by offering raw melodic, chordal, bass or drum ideas for musicians to build upon within their own software.

The tool includes around 250 genre-based "Palettes" covering everything from familiar styles like 80s disco and 90s R&B to niche categories such as "Kawaii Future Bass" and "Anime World". Users have limited control, choosing genre, note density, BPM and key rather than typing detailed text prompts, and the basic MIDI-style sounds are intended to be exported and refined with other synths rather than used as-is. The launch follows a period of recovery for Roland, which had drawn criticism over its Roland Cloud subscription service but recently won back goodwill with products like the P-6 Creative Sampler, SH-4d, Gaia 2 and TR-1000; however, its move into AI-generated music may prove less popular given the wider music community's wariness of the technology.
