Nicolae Brica, 48, has admitted drink-driving offences after his car mounted a pavement in Norwich on Christmas Eve and killed Thomas Plane, 28, while seriously injuring Plane’s brother. Brica told Norwich Crown Court he wants to be deported after serving his prison sentence; the case matters because he faces custody for a fatal crash and his future in the UK may be affected.

Brica had 68 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, nearly twice the legal limit of 35 milligrams. The collision happened at about 1.30am, and Plane died at the scene from chest injuries; his brother’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening. Brica, who has indefinite leave to remain, was told a custodial sentence was inevitable and could be as long as six years; sentencing is due on 8 October.
