## Key points

- Ronaldo retires from Portugal aged 41.
- He leaves with 234 caps and 146 goals.
- A dispute over his place clouds his farewell.

## Summary

Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football at 41, ending a Portugal career marked by records and major titles but clouded by a dispute over his place in the team. His decision followed coach Jorge Jesus leaving him out against Norway, bringing into focus tensions between Ronaldo’s ambitions and Portugal’s changing needs.

Ronaldo made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals for Portugal, both men’s international records. He helped the country win the 2016 European Championship and Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025, but never won the World Cup despite scoring at six editions. The Portuguese Football Federation thanked him and said he should receive a fitting tribute, though it is unclear whether he will have an on-pitch farewell.
