Ireland's national broadcaster RTÉ is producing a drama series about the murder of Bobby Ryan, known locally as "Mr. Moonlight," one of the most closely followed criminal cases in recent Irish history. The series, titled The Murder of Mr. Moonlight, has been pre-bought by the BBC and is being made by Conker Pictures and Samson Films, with Banijay Rights handling international distribution, marking a significant international vote of confidence in RTÉ's drama output.

The show, adapted by Malcolm Campbell from Catherine Fegan's book, dramatises Ryan's disappearance in June 2011 and the discovery of his body two years later in a slurry tank, along with the ensuing trial of Patrick Quirke, who was convicted of the killing. Brendan Coyle plays Ryan, with Owen McDonnell as Quirke and Sinéad Keenan as Mary Lowry, Ryan's girlfriend; the ensemble also includes Hazel Doupe, Carolyn Bracken and Ian Lloyd Anderson. Set in rural County Tipperary, the series is the first in what RTÉ hopes will be a strand of dramas based on real Irish stories, as the broadcaster plans a record 160 hours of Irish drama in 2026.
