Spain midfielders Fabian Ruiz and Gavi returned to their shared hometown of Los Palacios y Villafranca, near Seville, following the national team's World Cup 2026 triumph in North America, where they were honoured with an unusual local tradition: being given their own body weight in tomatoes. The gesture, presented at an official town hall reception, reflects the deep pride the small town of fewer than 40,000 residents takes in producing multiple World Cup winners, and forms part of a broader civic tribute including renamed football fields and a planned monument.

At the ceremony, Ruiz and Gavi wore their gold medals and stepped onto weighing scales to determine their tomato allocations, receiving 85kg and 68.5kg respectively. Former Spain winger Jesus Navas, the town's first World Cup winner in 2010 and recipient of the same tomato tradition after Euro 2024 alongside Ruiz, also attended the event. The town council said it plans to build a monument dedicated to all three players, describing them as role models who represent "the pride of an entire town."
