Footage reportedly shows residents in Nepal’s Rasuwa region fleeing on foot and by vehicle as floodwaters rapidly engulfed a settlement, turning streets into fast-flowing rivers within minutes. The disaster has prompted major rescue efforts and heightened concern for communities near newly formed and unstable bodies of water.

Officials said a glacier collapse triggered flooding described as a “tsunami from the sky”, with reports that at least 579 people had died and 1,924 were missing, including 33 British nationals. A lake formed by avalanche debris upstream in Tibet later began overflowing, briefly suspending helicopter rescues; Chinese authorities subsequently assessed the risk as manageable and operations resumed.
