## Key points

- Russell Wilson interviewed for NC State’s head coaching vacancy.
- Philip Rivers had been reported as the focus of the search.
- Wilson has NC State ties but no coaching experience.

## Summary

Russell Wilson has interviewed for North Carolina State’s head football coaching vacancy, adding a prominent candidate to a search that had appeared to centre on former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers. The move matters because both men have ties to NC State and could bring high-profile football experience to a programme seeking a new direction.

NC State fired Dave Doeren after a 31-28 defeat by Stanford left the team 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the ACC; it later beat California under interim coach Todd Goebbel. Rivers, now coaching St Michael Catholic in Alabama, has said he is focused on finishing the school season, while his son is committed to NC State for 2027. Wilson played three seasons at NC State and has 13 NFL seasons, a Super Bowl title and no coaching experience; he has worked as a television analyst this season.
