## Key points

- Moscow will host the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships.
- It is the first Olympic federation global event in Russia since 2022.
- The event will help athletes qualify for Brisbane 2032.

## Summary

Moscow has been awarded the 2030 World Weightlifting Championships, making it the first Olympic federation to choose Russia for a global event since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The decision signals a partial return to international sport for Russia, though it does not settle whether Russian athletes will be able to compete under their national symbols at the Olympics.

The International Weightlifting Federation announced the host city four months after allowing Russian athletes back into its events. Moscow last staged the championships in 1983; the 2030 event will also count towards qualification for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. The IOC provisionally lifted its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee in July but said it would not organise events in Russia or invite Russian government officials, while Ukraine has appealed that decision.
