The secrecy strategy mirrors Cohen's successful approach with the Borat franchise, designed to allow the character to catch prominent individuals off-guard during filming and conduct pranks without advance warning.

Ali G, a satirical British hip-hop persona that debuted on British television in the late 1990s before gaining wider exposure through HBO's Da Ali G Show, last appeared in a feature film in 2002. That earlier film, Ali G Indahouse, earned modest international box office returns before Cohen shifted focus to the Borat character, which became a major commercial and critical success, most notably with the 2020 sequel that received two Oscar nominations.
