Salmonella outbreak: What we know so far

The UK Health Security Agency has declared a national outbreak of salmonella food poisoning after one person died and hundreds fell ill, with imported eggs or egg-containing products the leading suspected cause. Investigators believe most infections were picked up while eating out rather than at home, pointing to catering businesses such as restaurants and cafes, though the exact source has not yet been confirmed.

Of 207 recent cases, 199 were in England (including 47 in London and 38 in Yorkshire and Humber), with six in Scotland, one in Wales and one in Northern Ireland. Whole-genome sequencing showed the bacteria involved are closely related, indicating a common source, and genetic similarities to a past outbreak linked to imported eggs have strengthened suspicion of that route. UKHSA says there is currently no identified link to UK-produced eggs or poultry, and standard advice stands: cook eggs thoroughly, wash hands carefully, and vulnerable groups should only eat runny or raw eggs bearing the British Lion mark or Laid in Britain assurance.
