This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Notting Hill Carnival, and to mark the occasion photographers Wayne Campbell and Wayne Crichlow have published a new book, Carnival of Resistance, drawing on more than 15 years spent documenting the event. A Guardian gallery showcases a selection of their images, capturing the carnival's mix of spectacle, community and personal identity, from elaborate costumes and samba dancers to steelpan drummers and quiet, reflective moments amid the crowds.

The photographs range from close-up studies of jewellery and dance to wider scenes of celebration, including the Jab Jab performers, the London School of Samba, and preparations for the Panorama steelpan competition. Both photographers describe carnival as rooted in resistance, emancipation and cultural identity, themes they say remain visible beneath the colour and noise 60 years after the event first took to the streets of Notting Hill.
